Ballet in 2 acts with one Intermission Duration: Act I – 60 minutes Act II – 60 minutes
Introduction Princess Odette has been transformed into a swan by the spells of the evil sorcerer Rothbart. She can be saved only by someone who loves her, swears eternal fidelity, and keeps that vow.
Act I
Scene One Prince Siegfried celebrates his coming of age surrounded by his friends. The guests raise their goblets in his honor, dance, and make merry. The Jester entertains everyone. Servants announce the arrival of the reigning Princess — Siegfried’s mother. She presents her son with a crossbow. After congratulating him, she reminds Siegfried that he must think about marriage. Tomorrow at the royal ball, the Prince is to choose his bride. Night falls. The guests depart. Siegfried remains alone, troubled by mysterious forebodings… Seeing a flight of white swans heading toward the lake, he rushes after them.
Scene Two A lake deep in the forest. The swans come ashore and turn into young maidens, and Siegfried lowers his crossbow, struck by the beauty of the Swan Queen. Odette tells him that she and her companions are under the power of the evil sorcerer Rothbart, and that only the power of true, selfless love can break the spell. Siegfried swears eternal love to her. Odette warns him: if he breaks his vow, nothing will ever save them. Dawn approaches. The swans glide once more across the lake. Odette bids Siegfried farewell.
Act II
Scene Three A ball at the castle. One after another, beautiful maidens are presented to the Prince, but none of them capture his heart — it belongs to Odette. The sound of fanfares announces the arrival of new guests. Disguised as a noble knight, Rothbart enters, accompanied by his daughter Odile. Siegfried is stunned — this young woman looks exactly like Odette! Odile does not allow the Prince to recover from his confusion: she enchants, tempts, and seduces him… until Siegfried, overcome, swears his love to her. Rothbart triumphs: Siegfried has broken the vow he gave to Odette, and now nothing can oppose his dark power. A vision of Odette appears before Siegfried, and realizing the terrible deceit of which he has become a victim, he rushes toward the lake.
Scene Four Night. The lake shore. Odette tells her friends of Rothbart’s treachery and Siegfried’s betrayal. The Prince appears and begs her forgiveness. A storm rises, the lake overflows its banks. The lovers are attacked by the black swans sent by Rothbart. Seeing Siegfried in mortal danger, Odette throws herself toward him. Together they defeat the sorcerer. Rothbart perishes, the storm subsides, and the White Swan becomes the maiden Odette once more.
